Zoom, which saw its daily meeting participants rise from 10 million to 300 million per day in April following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, has steadfastly become the go-to video conferencing platform for people all over the world, and in ways that have surprised Yuan.
“We never thought about consumers or K-12 schools when we started planning the year 2020,” Yuan told Time. The ubiquitousness of Zoom propelled him to the Forbes billionaires list, despite competition from other platforms such as Google Meet and Microsoft Teams and despite the dark cloud of security concerns that loomed over Zoom in the spring of 2020.
Fortunately, Yuan and his company responded quickly to tighten up Zoom security and introduce new features to the platform, like 256-bit GCM encryption. In turn, Zoom was the most downloaded free app in 2020. The platform remains nimble to meet current and future needs of its users. And speaking of its user base, it’s grown as well. With the necessity to hold many virtual events online, opportunity has been created in that businesses and organizations can actually reach more people than ever before, albeit in a very different way.
