[fusion_dropcap boxed=”yes” boxed_radius=”” class=”” id=”” color=”” text_color=””]I[/fusion_dropcap]f you’ve been allowing your team to work from home like many employers in these crazy COVID times, you might be wondering when – or even if – you’ll be asking them to make the shift to working onsite again.
That “if” is a big one, for good reasons. Now, thanks to increasingly fast and reliable internet connections, along with a host of new options for collaboration software and apps, it’s easier than ever to let your staff work from home. By equipping your employees with the right tools, they’ll be able to work collaboratively, send each other messages, and even meet virtually via apps like Zoom.
All in all, there are increasingly fewer reasons not to allow your staff to work from home and a whole host of reasons why you should. Read on for seven of them…
- They will often get more done.
Believe it or not, staff who work from home will often actually get more done than they would be working from the office. This is because there will be fewer distractions, in many cases (no more water cooler chats). They won’t be tired or cranky from their commute, and they’ll gain productive time by not having to sit in traffic. They’ll have access to the comforts and necessities their home offers, at their fingertips. Trips out to take lunch are less likely when the kitchen is just a few steps away.
What’s more, whether consciously or subconsciously, your team members may feel they need to earn the right to work from home, meaning they’ll work to do at least as much as they would in the office (and probably more).
- They will be happier.
This shouldn’t be understated. People who have the option to work from home can do more of the things they want to do and design their work to fit around their lifestyle, which is the way work should be. The result is happier staff who will ultimately work better and, at the same time, be more likely to stay with you.
- You will attract better employees.
Think about this the next time you’re hiring: when you tell your prospective employees they’ll be able to work from home, they’ll be more likely to want to work for you. With more and more companies moving to remote work, keeping up with this expectation means you’ll have your pick of the best candidates rather than being an applicant’s last resort.
- You’ll appear more forward-thinking.
Let’s face it: in the next decade (or sooner), working from home is going to become the norm, anyway. You may as well embrace it now and be a forward-thinking organization, rather than a dinosaur stuck in the past.
- Your overhead costs will go down.
A 100% remote work environment means no more leasing or owning office space. Even if your staff work from home some of the time, or in a hybrid situation, you’ll be able to have a smaller office and reduce your energy bills. You’ll still be paying them the same, and their productivity will either remain constant or increase, resulting in a better bottom line.
- You’ll be more flexible.
Sometimes, life throws us a curveball that we aren’t expecting. (COVID, anyone?) You never know what’s in store for the economy, the industry, or business as a whole. And even when COVID is over, we still don’t know what’s on the horizon in terms of other emergencies or disasters. If your workplace is flexible enough to allow staff to work from home, it will be better at adapting to these situations. See how this senior center stayed adaptable and made the transition to Zoom when COVID hit.
- You can branch out.
When your employees are no longer forced to commute to work, they won’t need to be based close to your office. That means that you can branch out and start finding employees from all around the world (or at least in the time zones of your choosing). The result? You’re no longer limited to the local talent pool, and you can look farther out to find someone perfectly suited for the job!
Are you considering remote work for your team? What reasons would you have for allowing (or not allowing) your team to work from home? Leave a comment below, and let’s discuss!
