[fusion_dropcap boxed=”yes” boxed_radius=”” class=”” id=”” color=”” text_color=””]W[/fusion_dropcap]ant a way to make your Zoom meetings more entertaining? Zoom’s software updates are adding new features all the time, and recent updates come in the form of filters and effects that you can use to make Zoom meetings fun and lighten the mood in the “room” with some humor.
Some of these filters and effects are pretty crazy, so use your best judgment to decide whether or not these belong in your professional meetings. But with family members, friends, and kids, these can make for some good laughs!
How do I access Zoom filters?
I’ll walk you through the steps of how to access and use filters. These are tips you can follow while using the desktop version of the Zoom app.
First of all, you’ll want to make sure you update your Zoom app to the latest version to ensure that filters are included in your app.
Many Zoom users don’t realize that filters are even a thing because there is not an obvious way to get to them from the main meeting screen. As I write this, there isn’t a distinct “filters” button on the meeting toolbar, but perhaps that will change in the future.
In the meantime, open a new meeting. (Do one with just yourself so you can test these first before unleashing them on anyone else!) Hit the small arrow on the Start/Stop Video button on your toolbar, and select “Choose Video Filter.”
This takes you to the Settings menu, and you’ll see that filters are included in the “Background & Filters” menu selection. (Feel free to play with virtual backgrounds, too!)
Zoom filter types
Under “Video Filters,” you’ll find lots of icons to scroll through and try out. There are filters that change the look and feel of the video itself, such as black and white, sepia, and others. (For you Instagram users, these are very similar to photo filters.)
There are also filters for frames. I personally like the old tube TV filter because (at the risk of aging myself) it takes me back to my childhood.
Then, you have what I would call responsive or wearable filters, which are similar to the ones you’d find on Snapchat. You can wear sunglasses, hats, animal faces, and more with these options. Zoom studio effects
Let’s also talk about Studio Effects, which you’ll find a link for beneath your filter options. Click on that to open the side panel that is full of facial features you can apply. There are options for eyebrows, mustaches and beards, and lip colors. You can also adjust the opacity of these to make them more or less subtle. I personally like the lip color feature as an everyday practical way to add a little color without actually wearing lipstick. (Can you tell I’m using a lip color filter here?)
The eyebrow options seem like overkill to me, but you can use them in a humorous way for sure, as I’ve done here:
That being said…
Use filters with caution.
Now, this is very important for those of you who flip between personal and professional meetings: make sure that you uncheck the box in the Studio Effects panel that says “Apply to all future meetings” and select the “none” buttons for all effects and filters that you want to turn off. The last thing you want is to be wearing a crazy fake mustache and top hat when you give your next Zoom presentation to your CEO (unless they just have a really good sense of humor). (Learn what other Zoom “nos-nos” you should avoid by watching this video.)

Consider surprising your participants with these filters for your next Zoom event or celebration, though. After all, we could all use a good laugh these days!
